Job Purpose

WaterAid Bangladesh being a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) focused international NGO understands that there is a strong interlinkage with health and WASH. WaterAid has supported and implemented various health and WASH focused projects and activities at the grassroots level starting with supporting improvements of WASH facilities at the community clinics, Upazilla Health Complexes to establishing a WASH Cell at Director General of Health Services (DGHS) and supporting IEDCR during Covid 19 pandemic. WaterAid Bangladesh has also piloted medical waste management at Phulchari UHC and provided Rainwater Harvesting infrastructure at coastal UHCs and CCs. As we consolidated our activities towards Universal Access and Climate Change, our focus on overall ‘health aspect of WASH’ or ‘WASH aspect of health’ has lost focus which WaterAid understand needs strengthening and an increased focus as we have seen that various new projects have health outcomes as a result of WASH interventions. Furthermore, it is our understanding that WaterAid Bangladesh is contributing to the WaterAid’s global aim 2 “Prioritise WASH across the health sector to improve public health” through these various interventions, the direct linkages of which needs to be established.

Key Responsibilities

• Document and critically analyze the past and existing ‘WASH and Health’ related interventions implemented by WaterAid Bangladesh and propose ways to integrate/ingrain ‘WASH and Health’ activities in programs/projects. • Document and exemplify the ways and means of how we are contributing to “WASH and Health” and what we are missing or can do in terms of contributing to “WASH and Health” – based on the current projects. • Critically assess the ‘WASH Cell’ established at DGHS and recommend ways to support it to make it more effective. • Support WaterAid Bangladesh’s various projects (i.e., WS4H, WASH4UP) to integrate health issues as and when necessary. • Support WaterAid Bangladesh in understanding the relationship of WASH and Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR) and how that can be incorporated in various projects. • Supporting WaterAid Bangladesh to understand better issues of Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) and how that can be incorporated in various projects. • Support WaterAid Bangladesh to conceptualize, collate and develop ‘Public Health’ related knowledge and projects.

Requisite qualifications, experience, and attributes

Education and Experience: • Must have MBBS Degree with Master’s in public health degree from a reputed educational institution. • At least 05 years’ experience in the relevant field with reputed development organization Skills: • Good understanding and knowledge on the health systems, and health service provision including community health and the engagement of civil society organisations in the national context • Demonstrated programme design, monitoring and evaluation skills, including designing pathways to sustainable impact at scale. • Financial management of programmes (in particular budget development) • Good networking with the relevant stakeholders; demonstrated influencing and representational skill • Working relationship with local government bodies; along with regional and global stakeholders Competencies: • Must be a team player with mutual trust and understanding in a mixed team • Capable to work under pressure, juggling with pooping priorities and meet deadlines • Good leadership qualities, problem-solving skills; able to draw confidence and support from others. • Pro-activeness and creativity, positive attitude and ability to work independently
